Diary (In the True Sense of the Word)

I’m reading Bronislaw Malinowski’s diary for my Cultural Anthropology class, and it’s completely weird. My favorite parts so far are when he admits to watching people bathe, and how he says he didn’t bother reading his wife’s letter.  I see now why his family fought against these being published; he was weird!

Math Problem of the Day

Me: I’ve got a math problem for you.  breakfast+lunch=brunch; lunch+dinner=?

Dustin: linner.  i think it makes sense to say it that way because the ‘b’ in breakfast takes priority and thus, brunch starts with a ‘b’.  therefore….linner makes sense because the ‘l’ takes the priority over the ‘d’ in dinner, but inherits the remainder of the word.

Dustin: fuck that was nerdtacular.

Me: that was amazing.

As You Like It

They say the hardest part of moving forward is not looking back.

In the past 6 months, my entire life has changed.  From my everyday to my future, literally everything.  And at first, that scared the shit out of me.  For weeks I woke up freaked out and fell asleep uncertain.  And then things started looking up.  I have no idea why, but I’m going to go ahead and say it was my amazing friends.

So, now…now things are good.  Really, really good.  I love school, I love my friends, I love not knowing what is going to happen in the future.  Now I wake up in the morning just being tired, and go to bed the same way.  It’s nice to know I’m working for something these days.  It makes me excited to see what will happen tomorrow, and next week, and two years from now.  And that feels amazing.

New Policy

Thank you to everyone who pooed on my dreams in the past 24 hours, especially since they’re extremely realistic.  To that end, I’ve adopted a new no-share policy.  The following kinds of questions will be answered on a need-to-know basis only:

  • When are you graduating?
  • How long are you going to take to get your MA?
  • What are you writing your thesis on?
  • What are your summer plans?
  • What are you doing for Spring Break?
  • What are you going to get your PhD in?
  • Do you really think that’s a good idea?
  • Why don’t you have a real job?
  • Why are there boxes on your porch?
  • …And other questions of this nature.

However, the following are still up for grabs:

  • Got your work done?
  • Where are you doing volunteer work?
  • What classes are you taking?/Are you enjoying them?
  • Where are you planning on living next year?
  • Are you going to get a dog?
  • Want to go hiking on Saturday?
  • Can I borrow a book?
  • …And other questions of this nature.

It’s International “That’s What She Said” Day.

In honor of International “That’s What She Said” Day, I’m posting the following.  In my defense, I was undercafenated.

Dustin: How was SC? My eyes are currently hating me for exposing them to more chlorine.

Me: Actually I’m still in SC. I’m finishing some more work and might play some disc golf before I head out.

Dustin: Nice!

Me: Boy, get some stinking goggles!

Dustin: Awww I wish I could come play disc golf too!

Me: Come see me and we can play together :)

Me: Wait. That wasn’t supposed to sound dirty.

Dustin: Hahahaha, it’s too late!

Me: Haha, oh well, you’re a big boy, you can handle it.

Me: Damn it, that sounds dirty too!

Holy rusted metal, Batman!

For crying out loud, I spent pretty much all weekend working on my presentation for my Modern Spanish Lit class.  This means that I’ve neglected to do all the following:

  • my French homework
  • my Anthropology homework
  • clean my bathroom
  • vacuum
  • my actual Spanish homework
  • sleep

I’m starting to get bitter over here.  And I’m way too young and cute for the bitterness to set in, dangit!

Overheard in Borders

Gray: ¿Por qué no casarnos y vamos a Madrid?

Me: ¿Realimente…piensas que esta es un buen idea? Estas loco. Usted tenía su ocasión.

Gray: (weird look)

Me: Can we get out of the Spanish Language section now?

…Why?

Text.doc

I just had this text message conversation with Katharine:

Me: Wait. I forgot what I was going to say.

Katharine: Lez can b gay. wildly fantastic. or the sad point that i remember this?

Earlier, on the phone:

Me: So N sits near this girl in French who’s gay too….(edited for length)…etc.

Katharine: Lesbians can be gay too??

Me: (ignoring this) So anyway, what I was saying was that [previous topic] was really annoying.

Katharine: I like how you didn’t even pause to acknowledge that I said that.

Katharine, you are wildly fantastic! :)

Thanks for the Update, K.

Katharine: So do you think that, all this time you’ve really had a thing for D?

Me: I…I think so. Yeah.

Katharine: Well it’s about time.

Me: Huh?

Katharine: Yeah, I’ve known that you guys are perfect for each other for like 2 years now.

Me: Um, thanks for letting me in on the secret.

Hey, Kids!

Sorry…it’s been a rough semester.  I’ve spent most of my time holed up reading stuff and listening to last.fm.

On the up side, I’ve become very acquainted with every one of the coffee shops near my house.  And the library. And the student center. And the living rooms of various friends (thanks!).

But my ears freaking hurt from my headphones! Anyone know of some good ear buds that won’t make my ears ache?  I’m seriously seeking suggestions here.

In this next week:

  • Anthropology midterm
  • French make-up exam
  • Spanish presentation (including supplemental super fun reading at no additional charge!)
  • Starting ESOL classes (teaching them, that is)

Oh! chacousa.com has Chacos on sale! Super excited! Finally got a new pair at 40% off! My old ones were too small and giving me arch cramps :(

…and now it’s back to making that study guide for Cultural Anthropology.  Sorry kids, I’m out.

Hurrah!

Hurrah! I finally finished my conference paper! And none too soon, the conference is Friday and I have to spend the next 24 hours reading it out loud and making sure I don’t repeat words too many times.

That is, when I’m not doing homework, going to classes, or meeting with my professor to make sure he’ll give me a WP in his class when I withdraw because of stupid computer errors…

Where are you, spring break?!
