Procrastination Tastes Like Blackcurrants

“I am a great student. No really, I am. I love school. I get excited about writing papers, I actually enjoy reading those mundane novels, in multiple languages no less! I really want to go to [insert school name here], and believe me, you’d be lucky to have me. I’m a hard worker, I spend weekends holed up in library basements. I like to read books and watch the news in my spare time. I actually love doing research. I’m not nuts, a sociopath or a sycophant, I’m just good at what I do. Also, I want to be a professor, so later on you don’t have to watch me take my education and have it benefit someone else; I’d be willing to stick around and let you guys pay me. I also really like to travel, so if you wanted to send me to teach at [insert name of sister school halfway around the world], that would be great too. Remember: I’m poor so I need an assistantship too. I look forward to seeing you in the fall.”

I decided years ago that I would be going to grad school. Unfortunately, I neglected to file “write personal statement lauding myself” into my To-Do pile then. In fact, it was not filed until sometime around August of 2007. This means there are about 5 more yearsto go before my brain decides it is absolutely necessary for me to write this damn thing. Which explains why I am currently sitting on a sun porch in Cape Cod, MA where it is exactly 45 (feels like 39, thank you weather.com) degrees out, putting my first thoughts into this essay. Right about now, that To-Do pile is starting to feel more like a To-Do avalanche.
1. Finish personal statement. This should be done somewhere around 2 months ago. Right.
2. Email statement to old philosophy professor so she can kill it and tell me what I really need to write.
3. Finish residency paperwork for Georgia, which apparently is the hardest state in the Union to actually be a resident of…who requires a car to be in your name to be considered a resident. What if you don’t have a car? What then? Sigh.
4. Finish online grad school applications.
5. Pay exorbitant amount of money for schools to process said applications. (read: call Dad, beg for him to pay for them and consider it a late Christmas present).
6. Find a new job, as I had to quit the old one since it paid nothing and I can’t handle being micromanaged.
7. Move. Living with the parents has gotten out of hand, it was only supposed to last for a few weeks wile I was interviewing for the illusive “real job” you’re promised when you graduate from college.
8. Pay off some of those annoying student loan people who keep sending me bills so I can stop having nervous breakdowns and freaking out my boyfriend.

Oh yes, and somewhere in there I have to remember to clean out my car, walk the dog and make sure the kitten doesn’t pee in the tub anymore. Unfortunately, seeing as I am exactly 1,122 miles from all those things, I’m left to work on this so-called personal statement and watch two retarded looking Pekingese dogs lick their paws.

Soundtrack of Our…This is entirely too cliche…

I have a hard time listening to music sometimes, because my internal soundtrack drowns out external noise. Yeah, that’s a little weird, i know. But there are some times when I honestly wish my life was like a movie. I should rephrase. There are a lot of parts of my life that honestly ARE like a movie…drama stalks me at times. Unfortunately, the super cool soundtrack reminiscent of Zach Braff’s work in “Garden State” seems to be missing.

A soundtrack of my life (right now):

Weezer: Undone (The Sweater Song)
KT Tunstall: Funny Man
Muse: Starlight
The Brunettes: End of the Runway
The Shins: Sea Legs
Goldfinger: 99 Red Balloons
Spoon: I Turn My Camera On
The Strokes: Whatever Happened?
Ben Harper: Diamonds on the Inside
Sufjan Stevens: Chicago
